The giant panda, also known simply as the panda, is a bear native to South Central China. It is easily recognized by the large, distinctive black patches around its eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. The giant panda's diet is over 99% bamboo, but they may also eat other grasses, wild tubers, or even bird and rodent carrion. In captivity, they may receive honey, eggs, fish, yams, shrub leaves, oranges, or bananas along with specially prepared food.
Giant pandas have a unique and distinct appearance. They have a large head, stocky body, rounded ears, and a short tail. Their fur is mostly white with black markings on their ears, around their eyes, and across their bodies. Adult pandas typically measure around 1.2 to 1.9 meters long, including a tail of about 10 to 15 cm. They can weigh between 75 and 135 kilograms.
Giant pandas once roamed a wide area of China and its neighboring countries, but due to human expansion and development, they are now found only in the mountains of central China, in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. The giant panda's habitat is at the forefront of conservation efforts, as their numbers have been dwindling due to deforestation and expansion of agriculture. They are currently listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List.
